THIRD GENERATION OF
We grow organic gluten free oat, organic rapeseed and grass on about 200 hectares of land. We produce high quality, clean and pure crops for mills. The grains are dried in our own dry house right after harvest and stored in our own silos to ensure best possible conditions for hygiene and humidity. We market and sell our products to mills in Finland and Continental Europe.
All our fields are located in the municipality of Joroinen, within 10 kilometers from our farm Torstila. Our region in central Finland is known for its fertile lands, mild micro-climate and wide fields. The northern, almost arctic location with white nights and cold winters offers ideal conditions for growing high quality oat and rapeseed. We cooperate with neighboring cattle farms by offering them pasturing land and in exchange we get valuable manure for our organic crop fields. |
Finland is one of the largest producers of oat in the world. Thanks to the optimal conditions, the harsh winters and long, bright summer night, the oat produced in Finland is famous for its very high quality. The fiber content is high, the oat is rich in vitamins and in antioxidants. The taste of Finnish oat is typically rich and the color is beautifully yellowish. Oat is known for enhancing digestion and is often considered as super nutritional food.
We make a careful selection and cleaning of seed and aim at selecting only high quality seeds. Seeds we use are mostly from our own production, tried with care in our own facilities. Some small batches are also purchased in order to drive our production towards the best possible quality. The usage of our own seeds guarantees complete traceability of each batch of oat. |
According to Wikipedia, "Organic agriculture can be defined as an integrated farming system that strives for sustainability, the enhancement of soil fertility and biological diversity whilst, with rare exceptions, prohibiting synthetic pesticides, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, and growth hormones."
Organic farming methods are dictated by EU regulation. According to EU regulations, every organic farm is audited on a yearly basis, in Finland by the Finnish Food Authority (Ruokavirasto). An organic product can be recognized by the Euro-leaf label, which is mandatory in all certified, organic retail products produced and packaged in the EU. The label can be used in processed food if at least 95% of the agricultural raw material is of organic origin. For us organic farming is about producing food in a sustainable way, giving the earth at least as much as it gives us, without pesticides or chemical fertilizers and ensuring the land is arable also for future generations. It is about caring about biodiversity and about our carbon foot print. And, what is beautiful about organic farming is that we can freely let our kids run around on the fields, at any time. |
